The Scope

Operational Database Design

Roll Good Games needed a one-stop-shop operations system to run their business. The system needed to handle the following operational needs: timesheet management, income & expense tracking, invoice generation & emailing, task lists, contact & resources indexes, scopes of service administration, and more. They needed this system to have a low monthly cost and be intuitive for those not familiar with the software.

Graphic Design

Roll Good Games had a variety of content for marketing and outreach including business card copy and loose branding style requests. They needed comprehensive branding support including the design of logos, business cards, backgrounds, header images, clothing/merch, and document templates.

My Approach: Operational Database Design

I created this operations system to enable users to manage nearly all aspects of their day-to-day business operations. The system is created in Airtable, making great use of the program’s interface features to create user-friendly dashboards and intuitive views of their data. Most major tasks are intended to be accomplished through pre-built interfaces, while administrative back-end tasks are reserved for admins or advanced users. The interfaces were made with specific operational procedures in mind. The timesheet interface allows users to quickly log time spent on different projects and auto-link them to the applicable invoice. The income overview interface shows all of the income generated so far, as well as projected income, billable vs. overhead time, and income breakdowns by year. The invoices interface allows finance administrators to quickly and easily view, filter, sort, email, and manage company invoices.

As a small business owner, I am always torn between a dozen “most important” items on my to do list— with Emma’s help, half of those items have been taken care of and the other half have been made both trackable and achievable.

My Approach: Graphic Design

I explored a few logo options and landed on a simple 6-sided die icon, placed on its point to reflect a sense of a “rolling” motion. The simplicity of the icon makes it highly flexible. The colors can be tweaked based on the desired application and, due to the square proportions, it is easy to place next to different text orientations and sizes.

The business cards went through several iterations as the copy, content, and orientation were explored with the client. My final version is on a traditional horizontal card with rounded edges and a graphic border. The front has the name of the company and the primary logo highlighted while also containing the company’s tagline, link, email, and social handle. The back of the card has the company name again but smaller and with a different text placement so that the focus is instead on the client questions and the graphic but functional QR-die.
